St. Peter and St. Paul
This sculpture shows the effort of the early church to maintain
unity while developing and adjusting customs not essential to
the faith. The two apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul, are discussing
the question: Should Gentile converts be required to follow the
Mosaic Rite of circumcision, diet and other customs?
The question had already been settled at the Council
of Jerusalem, but Peter did not always follow the agreement
in practice. He endorsed the Jewish practice when among
the Hebrews, but not when among Gentile converts.
