The Way of the Saints

St. Therese of Lisieux 1873-1897
The Little Flower
Patroness of the Missions
Feast Day October 1

Therese was born in Normandy, France in 1873. At the age of 15, after a pilgrimage to Rome to beg the Holy Father's permission to join the convent at such a young age, she entered the Carmelite Convent in Lisieux. She was always a humble servant to her fellow sisters, always patient with those who were impatient and irritable, and had great devotion to the Child Jesus. She is best known as "The Little Flower" because she saw herself as the smallest flower in God's garden and thus she formulated her "little way" of doing ordinary things with extraordinary love. She was named Patroness of the Missions because of her keen desire to be a spiritual missionary, praying always for others, particularly those who did not know God. She died in 1897 at age 24.
